Mortar is meant to be the sacrificial part of a brick wall. Over time it erodes, lets water in and starts to fall out. Repointing replaces it before the bricks themselves start to fail. Done well, it is one of the best-value repairs you can make to an older home.
We rake joints out to the right depth, match the original mortar colour and profile, and use lime-based mortars on older, softer brick where a hard cement mix would do damage.

Repointing that lasts
The most common mistake we see is hard cement mortar pushed into soft old brick. The mortar ends up stronger than the brick, so the brick face breaks away instead. We choose the mortar to suit the wall, and we rake joints deep enough for the new mortar to bond.
Brick repairs and replacement
Where individual bricks have spalled or cracked, we cut them out and replace them with the closest match we can find, often recycled brick from the same era. Larger areas of damage are rebuilt in sections and tied back into the existing wall.

How do I know if my brickwork needs repointing?
Look for mortar that is recessed, crumbling, sandy to the touch or missing, and for damp patches on internal walls. If you can scrape the mortar out with a key, it is time.
What is the difference between repointing and tuckpointing?
Repointing replaces worn mortar. Tuckpointing is a decorative finish on top: a coloured mortar flush joint with a fine raised line, common on Victorian and Federation homes.
Will the new mortar match?
We match colour and joint profile to the original, and test samples on the wall before we start the full job.
Can you replace just a few bricks?
Yes. We replace individual spalled or cracked bricks and blend them in with matched brick and mortar.
